CHIEF MRS GLORY EKPO: THE JINX BREAKER COMETH

It is gradually becoming likely that Chief Mrs Glory Ekpo will break the jinx as the first ever woman to represent Etinan Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.

Never in the history of our current democratic journey which started in 1999 has a woman occupied that coveted seat.

In 1999, it was Honourable Emma Bassey who was elected on the platform of the National Democratic Party (NDP). Bassey was reelected in 2003 and served till 2007 when a former Local Government Council Chairman of Etinan, Hon. Aniedi Ikpong King, still of the PDP, took the baton and served till 2011. Another PDP member, Hon. Daniel Akpan Effiong served from 2011 to 2015, and was succeeded by Rt Hon Samuel iKon, who later gave way for Rt Hon Onofiok Akpan Luke in 2019.

The gender monopoly on that seat is however being strongly challenged following the rife acceptability of Chief Mrs Glory Ekpo.
Across the wards in Etinan, Nsit Ibom and Nsit Ubium Local Government Areas, the wave of support keeps soaring. It has become glaring that indeed the APC nominated a very popular candidate.

It was the rife clamour for increased women participation in politics that made the All Progressives Congress (APC) entrust the party ticket to her.
In the PDP, former House of Assembly member representing Nsit Ibom State Constituency, Mrs Mfon Ekong cried foul after being robbed of the party ticket. She said her party of lacking internal democracy, and particularly accused the flagbearer of the PDP, Obong Paul Ekpo of defrauding her by luring her to sell her house with the promise that the proceeds shall be used in securing her the ticket. What PDP failed to do, APC did it with no hassles.

Also, PDP's monopoly on the seat is being given a strong challenge.
The aforementioned Hon. Emma Bassey, Hon Aniedi Ikpong King, Hon Daniel Akpan, Rt Hon Samuel Ikon, and the current MP, Rt Hon Onofiok Akpan Luke all served on the platform of the PDP.
The pendulum is now expected to swing to the APC given the growing acceptability of Chief Mrs Glory Ekpo.

A dual jinx is about to be broken. The gender and political party monopoly is about to fall in the federal constituency.

Of course, she has not hidden her preparedness for the office.
During a recent outing, she quipped, "I am aspiring to be the mouthpiece of Etinan, Nsit Ibom, and Nsit Ubium people. Under my watch, every citizen; the high and the low, the educated and the uneducated, the rich and the poor indeed all classes of people regardless of their position on the social strata, will be highly represented. Democratic representation must be seen through the lens of stewardship if the citizens are to benefit from the process."

She has earned trust and is eminently qualified to represent Etinan Federal Constituency.
