WHO SAYS PDP A RELIGION IN AKWA IBOM STATE?

By Abasiokpon Benson

It is a mark of ignorance of recent history for some people to say that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, is a religion in Akwa Ibom State. What makes it a religion? Is it because it has not tested defeat yet at the level of Governorship position? But have there not been seats occupied by other parties in the House of Assembly, House of Representatives and local government councils since 1999 till date? If there has been, how then would someone logically say the party is a religion in the state?

PDP no longer has  absolute grip on people of the state as falsely propagated by paid propagandists. Or is it a religion because Udom Emmanuel is a deacon and his preffered candidate a controversial pastor? PDP can't be a religion simply because of those decorative religious titles. What is it they see to attest to being a religion? Nothing! Even now, PDP is standing on clay feet.

PDP, at the national levels, boasted likewise in 2015 and even swore it will rule Nigeria for about 60 (or was it 600 years?). That same year when the boasts sounded loudest was the year of its sacking. Even in 2019, PDP could not recover to get back on its feet till now, which it is still in the the state of uncertainty to dislodge APC. Is PDP in power presently at the national level to be a religion as earlier boasted? No!
So, if PDP at the national boasted and failed to prove that it is a religion, what audacity does anyone have in the state to say so?

Politics is dynamic, so we should not allow propagandists who are sponsored by panicked leaders of the obviously dying PDP to deceive the vulnerable electorate, from joining the imminent “ballot revolution” about to  sweep across the state. The recent desperate action by Akwa Ibom PDP is due to the emerging evidences that 2023 is its vacation time. It has to take some rest, and it maybe indefinitely so that a better leadership can be ushered in.

People make any party whatever it becomes, the party does not make people. So wherever popular politicians exit to with their massive followings, such party becomes popular and attract more follwership. It automatically becomes a popular brand. It is people that strengthen the PDP but once they are treated unjustly and with impunity, the same persons can cross over to boost the fortunes of another party, even if it is a new one.

Sadly, the PDP  in Akwa Ibom has failed the people in all ramifications. It no longer places premium on the masses but on a cabal. It has failed in the provision of the basic infrastructure and welfare. It has rather chosen to use poverty as a weapon against the people as a way of controlling their electoral actions for a pittance!

With such woeful report in the state, no right thinking electorate who has seen mass poverty and ruthless economic-strangulation gripping the population  will consciously give his vote to PDP in 2023. There has to be a positive change, as change is constant. It is what will sack the nonchalant, uncaring and self centered  leadership style adopted now by PDP.

This is the ripe time for positive change in Akwa Ibom state. The tyrannical leaders know their time is up. And in  attempt to dissuade the electorate from abandoning the sinking ship, they have conscripted propagandists to circulate false analogy starved of facts about the party being a religion in Akwa Ibom State. If PDP is truly a religion, why the panic?

Yet, they refuse to tell the public that across the nation that there have been instances where the ruling parties were dislodged in recent times. APGA was not originally the ruling party in Anambra, nor Labour Party at a time in Ondo. They sacked the ruling parties to take over. Even APC in Lagos State cannot boast that it is a religion because the party stll battles hard to stay on. There are some constituencies in Lagos in the hands of the opposition parties. Therefore, any party in power can be dislodged if the pillars become weakened by poor leadership as presently witnessed in Akwa Ibom State.

So, before anyone comes with misrepresentation of facts and lies to deceive some vulnerable electorate that PDP is Akwa Ibom’s religion, he should be reminded that no party is indispensable and non is a religion.

The hurriedly packaged ward meeting of PDP held on Saturday across the state was as a result of fear that the umbrella is badly torn, so they do not want members to seek shelter elsewhere. It was to beg aggrieved members, so they said, but it is a belated action because most people have made up their minds to quit. Soon, the imminent tsunami will be public.

The newspaper publications and social media posts of receiving decampees is a face saving gimmick. A stage-managed act. PDP in Akwa Ibom is on its dying bed and  may  be lowered into the grave in due time.
